Ingenting är klart
February 2023

Ingenting är klart (Nothing is Finished / Clear)

Viktor Kopp's portals, called paintings, send us to different places, thoughts and moods. These portals are extremely loaded with content, they are both in the room where we find ourselves, in the gallery, but also in where or what they point to. As in that place of where and what, there, and in how they want to tell us. Titles, angles, corners, points, chocolate and lines are in place, both here and there. Kopp tells me that for him it's about working with an aspect of painting that is here and there, both with us but at the same time somewhere else. The depth of the images is great and fleeting at the same time, what is on the surface is a fraction of the sensation they evoke. At the same time the surface is able to show us out into the unknown or perhaps further on a journey to the place that they point towards.
We also talked about the importance of being able to be transported by means of images, into images (to think yourself away through images). For example in an image that acts as a portal into another place whilst being itself also while depicting its own self. The painting represents painting, an image. The doors within the paintings have no sides, that might give a suggestion of how things are. In all this spatiality and in the thoughts of spatiality, one can be reminded that it is difficult to decide where one lies on a scale between reality and fiction in one's thoughts sometimes. Thinking through images and communicating through images will perhaps never be exactly clear, it should be murky; neither complete nor clear. The door as a symbol within the paintings, for me, means that a large amount of energy will be needed in meeting with it, as I don't know what will be there when I open it. But I'm looking forward to going through it. What is clearly, definitely, brightly, compactly, distinctly, serenely and glassily done?
